Teacher Interview: Technology in the Physical Education Classroom
The teacher interview that I have done involves a middle school physical education teacher at a 6A classification school in northeast Kansas. With the increasing pressure of No Child Left Behind teachers in all content areas are seeking ways to enhance the overall learning atmosphere of their students. This particular PE teacher attempts to incorporate varying degrees of technology and tie the technology into the physical education curriculum as well as relating to other content areas. One particular way of doing this has been with heart rate monitors. With these monitors the students are able to track there heart rate while participating in varies activities during the PE class time. At the end of each class the students record their results from that day’s class on a chart. When the students reach the end of the lesson (over the course of one to four weeks), the information that the students recorded is then inputted into a spreadsheet by each student.
Once the information has been correctly entered into the spreadsheet the students then create graphs of their heart rate over time and then analyze the results as individuals and as a class on a whole. By doing this the students are able to incorporate mathematics into the PE content and learn about the body and how it works within PE as well. In addition to the heart rate monitors students also learn about varies ways of measuring body mass index. Within both of these activities students are using various pieces of exercise equipment that are equipped information about what their body is doing and the intensity of the exercise that they are participating.
While this type of technology cannot be used everyday in physical education class varying degrees of it can be successfully incorporated into the PE classroom and not only will enhance the student overall but also introduce them to various function of their body and ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout their lifetime.
